Dear Mr. Dawson,
My
Thank you very much for your letter of April 19th, from which I am glad to hear that this question is now being tackled seriously.
I note, however, that all the claims referred to by you are in respect of stores actually supplied to various Empire Governments, whereas, as you will see from our past correspondence,
the claims which we are pressing are those in respect of advances made by Hong Kong merchants to Chinese manufacturers, and of stocks of raw materials held by Hong Kong merchants at the time of the Japanese attack. Several months ago I was told by your Department that you were in consultation with the Ministry of Supply and other interested departments with regard to these claims, and the object of Mr. Keswick's original letter to Mr. Creech Jones was in the hope that we would hurry on the conclusion of these whitehall discussions.
I do not wish to trouble you personally too much in this matter, and if you can tell me who is now dealing with it I will get in touch with him. I have, for more than a year, maintained contact with the various officials through whose hands this question has passed, and it was only when I could not discover who took the subject over from Volonel Darby that we felt impelled to get our Chairman to write to your Minister.
Yours sincerely
W. F. Dawson, Esq., M.B.E. Colonial Office, The Church House,
